Kaiwi prepares for world titles in LA

By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
Mr South Pacific Donald Kaiwi will not be a part of the final PNG body building team yet to be announced for the Pacific Games in Samoa.
He has instead set his sights on the November World titles in Los Angeles, USA.
The final team named by the PNG Body Building Federation will be about half of the current squad of 22.
This was revealed during PNGBBF’s major fundraising dinner in Port Moresby on Friday.
Although Kaiwi was a strong Pacific Games medal contender, PNGBBF president Timai Tally said the federation respected Kaiwi’s decision to prepare for higher competition.
Tally said while other Papua New Guineas have competed at previous world titles unofficially, Kaiwi will be the first to compete officially.
Kaiwi said he had earlier set a goal to train one full year to prepare for the world titles.
“I weighed about 95 kilos last year but I have put on some weight to be 121 kilos now”, he said.
“I’m training three days a week trying to get my weight down by 30 kilos”.
Out of the 22 Pacific Games squad, there are two female body builders - Elizabeth Monema (under 57) and Monica Mugarenang (under 52).
Tally confirmed that the two women will definitely travel however, the menís squad will be trimmed as advised by the PNG Sports Federation due to the logistical factors.
Meanwhile, Friday’s fundraiser netted about K12,000 with more than half of that amount still needed to send the team and two officials.
The balance is expected to be raised through several minor fundraisers.
PNGBBF thanked their sponsors Trukai Industries, National Catering Service, Ela Motors and Boroko Foodworld for assisting with the fundraiser.
