Gazelle win hopes dashed by the rain

By EKONIA PENI
GAZELLE almost pulled off a double victory in Port Moresby men’s softball at the weekend only for their campaigns to be disturbed by heavy rain that washed out the main match yesterday against Airways Bears.
Gazelle firstly belted second-placed SPIA Manolos 10-2 on Saturday in the washed out match from Jan 28.
Then yesterday they were in full control of the match against Bears 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning when it was washed out.
On Saturday, Gazelle’s veteran pitcher Patrick Pilak played a blinder when he restricted Manolos from scoring for three innings while his team proceeded to score eight runs by the top of the fourth inning.
Daniel Kinakava, Demas Totil Jr., and Pius Martin scored the first points in the first inning followed by Tony Daple, Kinakava and a solo homer run by Pilak in the second inning before Colin Mangot and Peter Urari scored the double in the third inning.
Another home run hit by Peter Kaminiel to score Mangot at the top of the fifth inning sealed the victory for Gazelle before Manolos scored their consolation points through Thomas Kuwoh and Ora Gime at the bottom of the fifth inning.
Gazelle and Bears will replay the washed out match on Saturday.
In the other exciting match yesterday, Bullets nearly pulled off an upset against top team Brown Eagles with pitcher Bobby Benson having the upper hand over Eagles batters.
Eagles jetted away to a four-run lead in the first inning through Eddie Wawaur, Paul Tabete (home run), Michael Bobe and Benji Paivu.
Bullets returned fire to score two runs in the third inning through Stanis Ponda and Daniel Move before Danny Evald and Move scored another two runs at the top of five to equalise.
Eagles can count their blessings when the powerful hitting Tabete score his second home run of the match that scored Wawaur to add the extras for Eagles to survive the day.
Elcom beat Malangan 11-1 in the washed out encounter on Saturday.
In the other matches Elcom forfeited Dolphins and Manolos backed from its loss to Gazelle on Saturday to thrash Malangan 11-1.
The other washed out match between Kopex and Samurai will be scheduled for Saturday.
Brown Eagles lead the competition 28 points, followed by Manolos 24, Elcom 21, Gazelle 17, Bears 16, Malangan 14, Bullets 10, Dolphins 9, Samurai 6 and Kopex one point.
In the B Grade Gazelle lead on 24 points, Eagles 22, Manolos 17, Samurai 17, Kopex 16, Elcom 12, Bullets 9, Bears 5, Dolphins 3 and Malangan 3.
