Butterflies too good for Tarangau
By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
A star-studded Mabey and Johnson
Butterflies line-up were too good in the end for defending
champions Hekari Tarangau beating them 26-6 in the Port Moresby
rugby league yesterday.
In a rain-affected match that produced a lot of errors,
Butterflies play-makers Charlie Wabo, Joseph Omai, Jessie Joe and
Benjamin John led their team to a five-tries to one victory.
Tarangau on the other hand were without many of their regular
players opting to blood young players like junior Kumuls Mathias
Emiabo and Danny Emiabo.
Butterflies scored first within the first five minutes when
fullback Chris Raphael dived over close to the right corner post.
Omai scored the Butterflies second try beside the right upright
with a trademark right foot sidestep close to the line.
Tarangau hit back in the eleventh minute of the second half when
Alex Kay scooped up a loose ball and dived over after Jessie Joe
had spilled the ball within his own 20m line.
Vagi Kapa converted from the sideline to take the scores to 8-6.
But the Butterflies took control after that, piling on three
unanswered converted tries in the last 22 minutes, one of which
involved superb quick hands by Omai and prop Michael Boeo to send
Bobby Yakopa over.
The other two tries were scored by Johnson Kuike and Benjamin
John.
In the other matches, Magani 18 beat West 12, Waliya 22 edged Puma
20, DoboWarriors 14 beat Brothers 8, Kone Tigers 34 thrashed Paga
10, Hawks 36 beat Souths 10 while Royals 22 overcame Defence 14.
After round two Butterflies, Kone Tigers, Hawks and Dobo Warriors
are on four points.
Royals, Brothers, Magani, Tarangau, Paga and Waliya are on two
points while the rest have yet to register victories.
Six of the Butterflies senior players were also involved in the
Brian Bell Bulldogs trial match earlier in which Jessie Joe scored
three tries to enable Brian Bell Blues to beat the Brian Bell
Yellows 36-12.
