Fighting for funds

By SHEILA LASIBORI
THE Papua New Guinea Amateur Boxing Union (PNGABU) needs money to send its boxers to the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, in May.
While the union is still in the process of selecting its boxers for the games some business houses have shown their support in the sport which brings out the real enthusiasm in individuals.
Eda Ranu on Friday committed K10,000 and board chairman Timothy Bonga assured (PNGABU secretary John Avira and life member Bernard Fong that the K10,000 cheque will be ready for pick by tomorrow.
“You have done us proud and we are happy to support,” Bonga said.
A construction company – KG Contractors – also committed K2,000 towards PNGABU.
While accepting the commitments, Fong said the union needed money to help its boxers make it to the Pacific Games.
“We need money to help the boxers,” he said adding that from about 13 boxers that took part in last weekend’s trials in Port Moresby, about seven will be selected for the games.
“If the selectors feel that they (boxers) are good they can go,” Fong said adding both the male and female boxers had participated in the trials with participants coming from other centres which included Wewak, Lae and the Autonomous region of Bougainville.
