Karkar cultural show

By MAUREEN SANTANA
Karkar Island is the biggest volcanic island in the Madang province.
It is a five hour trip from the mainland on a passenger boat. A faster way to get there would be to take an hours PMV drive to Kubugam then a half hour dingy ride across.
I was recently invited to Karkar to witness a cultural event organized by the Sir Arnold Amet's committee.
I traveled by boat from Kubugam to Sumkar district station Kinim then was taken to a village called Koul.
I learnt from people there that they had spent weeks gearing up and preparing for the event.
The cultural show is one that the Karkar people organize to get together to sing and dance to celebrate the end of the year.
The cultural singsing celebrations and cultural exchange is a vital part of the Karkar people's culture.
Over 16 singsing groups from around Karkar and two from the north coast and Malala in mainland Madang took part in the event.
The North coast group performed a traditional myth through a song and dance that captivated the crowd.
According to Atis Deme the coordinator to Sir Arnold Campaign committee the aim of the event was to bring the people of Karkar together.
Mr Deme said it was a way for the young generation to learn and appreciate the culture.
It was another stepping stone that was initiative by Former Chief Justice Sir Arnold Amet and supported by prominent persons on the Island like John Middleton one of the plantation owner on the Island also the Member for Sumkar Mathew Gubag and Star Mountains General Manager Uron Salum to bring tourism to the Island.
The event will now become an annual event and Sir Arnold will be launching his campaign in April with another event of cultural spectacular celebrating his Logoho Chieftainship awarded to him by the Queen.
