Dutch top PNG Women
THE Netherlands posted an impressive 8 wicket win
over PNG in the opening round of the ICC Women’s World Cup qualifiers in
Stellenbosch, South Africa on Monday. PNG sent into bat were bowled out for
102 runs after 37 overs with Captain Kune Amini top scoring with a patient
32. The Dutch (2-103) showed their class when they went on to get the
required runs in 28 overs with the loss of just two wickets. Although
registering a loss in their first game Amini was positive about the team’s
effort, “We’ve never played on turf before so we tried our best and got some
runs” she said. It was a good experience and we want to improve in the next
couple of games.”Bad start for U23 soccer
THE Under 23 soccer squad had a poor start when
six of Morobe Kumuls players could not make the plane for the first trial
match against the Port Moresby-based NSL combined team yesterday Telikom
Park. Coach George Cowie said he was handicapped as he got only 12 players
to work on during the trials. Despite the 1-1 draw, Cowie said there is a
lot of improvement to be made, considering playing only half of the team
which many players played out of their positions. “We will be working on the
areas following the assessment and will be ready for the next trial match on
tomorrow against the Port Moresby team,” he said.
