WEDNESDAY, me hearties, so avast there, and prepare to board — the PMV to work. Now there’s a thought. Maybe we could have all PMVs without engines, but with wind sails, thus avoiding noxious fumes and environmental pollution. Hoist the sails and let no man say “land ahoy” until the cliffs of Waigani are spied upon the horizon.

NO, you may not have your tot of rum before breakfast .... Did you notice that story yesterday about Daru villagers paying K12 for a packet of smuggled Black and Gold sugar? Now that sounds like a pirate tale, if you like. We do recall the manager of the old Daru Hotel Marc Seidler, who was wont to inexplicably turn on exotic supplies of brandy and scotch within his hostelry .... but sugar?

THAT raid by police on the Institute of PNG Studies was inexcusable, giving the impression that the place is some haunt of CD smugglers intent on making huge sums from pirated PNG music. The facts: The head of the musical division of the Institute is Don Niles who is an internationally famous ethnomusicologist.
***
DON has dedicated virtually the whole of his working life to recording, cataloguing and writing about the traditional and contemporary sounds of PNG music. If ever anyone deserved the respect and appreciation of the whole community, it would be Don, who has battled the indefensible apathy of successive governments and somehow kept the PNG music collection not only intact, but growing.

WE would have thought that our leaders, who know Mr Niles and his work well, or those Papua New Guineans, who have paid tribute to his work over the years, might have found the time this week to say so publicly. But no — it seems his reward and that of those, who have worked with him was destined to be a police raid on the institute premises. For shame!

JUST a quickie for film buffs who are home at lunchtime — 7 Central runs a mid-day movie. “Under Fire” at noon today is the story of war correspondents in Nicaragua; produced in 1983. It stars Gene Hackman and Nick Nolte and scored excellent write-ups when released. Enjoy!
