Distance learning centre closed

THE Grade 10 and 12 matriculation programme at Dauli Teachers College, conducted through the Department of Open and Distance Learning (DODL) of the Papua New Guinea University of Technology will no longer enrol students as of this year.
I have been given instructions by the head office in Lae to shut down the year-old matriculation programme for an indefinite period of time.
Beside many other problems that the programme and I had faced, the main problem was that I had been punched by a uniformed policeman (identified) for some unforeseen reasons.
This resulted in bleeding lips and a near fracture to my jaw.
The policeman, who claimed to be a matriculating student, accused me of misusing or stealing his money from refunds.
If this was true, I should have been put behind bars with formal charges laid but this policeman has seen fit to resolve problems through violence.
This sort of policeman paints a bad picture of good, hardworking and committed disciplined officers.
I have laid a formal complaint with the Police Department’s public complaints unit in Mendi.
The complaint was lodged last month but it is taking a while for the authorities to discipline the officer concerned.
In many public places, some undisciplined policemen use the barrel of a gun and their blue uniform to frightened people and terrorire the public for small problems involving the police and the public.
Until the police sort this matter, all intending Grade 10 and 12 students will have to travel to the Mt Hagen study centre to upgrade their marks.
