Rebels record stunning win in
softball trial
By ELIZABETH VUVU
REBELS stunned Kokopo United in the women’s softball trials of the
Tomadir Sports and Recreation Foundation trials to win what looked
to be a United victory.
This was until the final inning when Rebels came from behind and
picked up five runs to walk away with their heads high.
The game started off with Kokopo United registering the first
point of the game through Helen Stanley.
After a good hit to Rebel’s short stop Angela Puikat threw a wild
throw to the first base allowing Stanley to secure second base. A
missed ball by the catcher saw her advance to third base and later
reached the home base through a sacrifice fly hit to the outfield
by Elizabeth Hubert.
Rebels were held scoreless in the first two innings through
United’s good pitcher/catcher combination in Roddy Luke and Elsie
Tevita and good support play from first base custodian Vibbie Mago,
second base Helen Stanley and short stop Maryanne Gerard.
United scored four runs in the top of the third inning through
good battings and unforced errors registering Vika Johnson,
Stanley, Mago and Luke.
Rebels scored two runs in the bottom on the third inning through
Janet Puikat and Josephine Augustine.
Both teams held each other scoreless in the fourth inning with the
score remaining at 6 runs to 2 in United’s favour.
Kokopo United’s final turn at bat did not click as the Rebels
tightened up the defence, restricting the Kokopo girls from
scoring. Rebels got their batting act together in their final turn
at bat seeing them picking five runs to edge out the stunned
United team 7-6.
Rebel’s victory has now put them in front of the women points
table with Kokopo United, Black Pythons and Tagi Hawks on second,
third and fourth respectively.
In the men’s encounter, Strivers and Black Pythons 2 and Tagi
Hawks (2)drew 4-4 and Strivers nailed Tagi Hawks (3) 4-0.
