Amini in charge of junior cricketers

By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
Last year’s junior sportsman of the year Charles Amini jr will lead the PNG under 15 cricket team to Samoa to defend their East Asia Pacific 8s title which they won in 2005.
Amini is the only remaining player from the team that beat Vanuatu in the final in Melbourne, Australia.
The team, comprising ten travelling and four non-travelling reserves, was announced in Port Moresby yesterday by PNG cricket board chairman Mick Nades and patron Sir Brian Bell.
The team includes batsmen Vagi Lou Oala (v-c), Hape Hape, Lega Siaka, Tony Tau (keeper), Nou Hila Owen, Mea Chris, all rounder Charles Amini Jr (c), fast bowler Raymond Haoda, medium pacer Lakani Seura and spinner Ambrose Viri.
The non-travelling reserves are Nou Rei, Laeka Daure, Goasa Arutu and More Leo.
The team leaves this Sunday for the Feb 26-March 4 tournament that will also see Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga and Japan take part.
The 8s tournament is a form of cricket where each team will field eight players and play a 20-over match.
Nades said PNG’s main rivals will be Fiji, Japan and Vanuatu.
“It is not going to be an easy win but I am confident they will come back with the trophy” he said.
The trip is yet another international event in the PNGCB’s calendar this year involving PNG teams.
The Marylebone Cricket Club of England will arrive on February 27 to play three matches against the PNG men’s side and two development teams. These teams will be announced on Thursday.
In May, the PNG men team will take part in the World Cricket League tournament in Darwin Australia while the women team will travel to Pakistan for the second round of the world cup qualifying series later this year.
