Politicians versus laws
It intrigues me to read of a “politician naked
with a minor in a car at a public place”. The politician is a lawmaker and
law enforcers found him to be breaking the law. The politician knew that he
was doomed, thus begging the police to let him go. Mind you, this is not the
first time and not the only politician doing that. There are other
politicians behaving similarly, who roam freely around the corridors of our
most sacred Haus Tambaran. Decisions and laws made from the Haus Tambaran
will be based on self justification; self-praise and self-appraisal that
will make people suffer and make the politicians benefit more (one law for
them, the other for everyone else). Why preach about surplus budgets when
people are still suffering. Roads, bridges, health services, drugs and
schools are on the fringe of disintegration and prices of goods and services
have sky-rocketed in the last five years. Enough is Enough! – Jimmy P
Waigi, Crater City, LaeWell done Amba Demo
Mr Isaac and the teaching team, you have made us
proud that the Amba Demonstration School has been ranked No 1 in the 2007
academic year, scoring a massive 86% in the Lae district. This is the first
time ever and credit must be made to those hard working teachers and the
school board for making history. The ground-breaking ceremony on Feb 15 to
allow the relocation of the upper grades’ classrooms from Balop is another
significant outstanding job done by the school together with the Lutheran
church and the Morobe education administration. The landowners of Butibam
and our member must be commended for allowing a smooth transition to take
place for the sake of our future generation. As a parent, I am proud to have
enrolled my three children at the school in the current year. Keep up the
good work. – EB, Butibam, Lae
Decriminalise prostitution
I support Governor Powes Parkop’s view (The National, Feb 20) that
prostitution should be decriminalised and regulated because this is one way
of controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS. Sex workers can go to hospitals and
have monthly medical checkups without feeling being discriminated against.
If prostitution is decriminalised, sex workers should operate in authorised
brothels, where safe sex practices can be promoted. Dr Marat is well
intentioned in saying nightclubs should be banned, but I don’t believe that
is the answer to saving the people of PNG, because we have to change our own
attitude first. The best thing is regulate the activities that take place at
the night clubs, as Parkop has suggested. – PNG Sumatin, Japan
