Appoint career diplomats to overseas missions

The letter of John Momis (The National, Feb 18) and the frustrated diplomat reveal some of the real things that are occurring at PNG embassies, which is typically in fighting among staff.
From previous experiences, some staff had to be recalled from duties abroad before their contracts expired. This is simply about junior staff trying to correct heads of missions of what should be done or not done under the foreign service handbook.
Both writers are coming out publicly about what goes on, which helps the Government to determine who should or should not represent PNG abroad.
Those suspected of deals should be recalled as they could seriously tarnish long established foreign relations in terms of political and business opportunities, mainly trade.
Political appointees are often people who do not know the rules of conduct within the foreign service and the work of real diplomats compared to trained career foreign service officers who sell PNG for our benefit.
Their approach and lack of understanding of their jobs can frustrate foreign service officers and result in missed opportunities. There are proper channels for reporting of misconduct.
