Bad management and abuse affect resettled Manam islanders

By ELIJAH FAIPARIK
BAD management and abuse are affecting Manam islanders who have resettled in the Bogia district of Madang province.
Care centre manager Lawrence Konakapoake said Manam islanders were facing problems with traditional landowners, land shortages, sanitation, continuous medical drug shortage, food shortage and other missing vital services.
Mr Konakapoake urged the Government to check with the authorities responsible for the allocation of funds to the care centre, such as the Manam resettlement committee, the Manam humanitarian committee and other concerned groups.
“Manam people should be heading these committees and not to other people,” he said.
“Since our arrival in Bogia, there has been fighting going on with the locals and we have not settled in yet.”
He said their children had left school and were now roaming the streets with no school, food and shelter.
The Manam leaders are willing to meet with authorities to discuss the future of the Manam islanders.
