Heavy diesel fumes trigger bomb scare

By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
HEAVY diesel fumes triggered a bomb scare at the 12-storey Pacific Place Building in Downtown Port Moresby on Wednesday morning.
The building was swiftly evacuated for about an hour while the PNG Defence Force explosives experts thoroughly scanned all the offices and rooms in the building.
PNG Defence Force explosive ordinance and disposal unit supervisor Sgt Rex Ningiura said they rushed to the building at about 9.30am after being alerted.
“All levels were alright except along the corridor of the 9th floor, where we smelt diesel fumes.
“We concluded that the fumes were from the building’s stand by diesel generator which must have seeped through the air conditioning duct. After all, there were a series of blackouts on Tuesday during the heavy rain and the generator was triggered on automatically.”
Mr Ningiura said a caller had phoned the building’s security guards at the ground floor to warn them of a bomb in the building, which turned out to be hoax.
