Body found floating offshore

By ELIZABETH VUVU
A BODY of a woman was found floating offshore in Lambu village on the west coast of New Ireland province last week.
According to Lambu villagers, the body was found by two fishermen paddling to sea, who had mistaken the body for a floating log.
As they paddled closer to the body, which was floating among sea debris, they saw that the body had both of its hands and left breast missing.
The villagers claimed that the woman’s missing body parts had been chopped off, and the body must have been in the sea for a week, judging by its colour.
The villagers said the body was placed in an old canoe which was converted into a makeshift coffin and was buried.
Due to poor road conditions, the matter was not reported to police until the next day.
New Ireland police are now seeking information on missing persons and call on the communities to come forward and assist them in their investigations to establish what might have happened to the woman, whose identity has not been established.
Police in New Ireland have contacted police in Rabaul to carry out similar investigation on any missing person.
