Children ‘miss out’ on places
By ALISON ANIS
CLOSE to 40 parents in NCD fronted up at
the division of high and secondary education office yesterday to demand
why their children had “missed out” on places at various high and
secondary schools in Port Moresby.
The group of parents, who turned up in the morning at the divisional
office at the Mutual Rumana Building along Waigani Drive, wanted to know
why their children “had missed out” or their “names had been dropped”
even though their certificates showed they were qualified.
Parents claimed they had been turning up at the office since the start
of school four weeks ago, to get answers, but they were being “left in
the dark”.
A frustrated mother, whose children missed out on Grade 10 and 11places
at the Kila Kila Secondary School, turned up at The National yesterday
to voice her concern.
“I am very frustrated. It’s been four weeks now, and my two children are
not in school because we were told there were no more places,” Debbie
Kasou said.
Mrs Kasou said she was one of the first people who enrolled her children
last December, which was around the same time their placings were
confirmed by an official from the secondary division.
She said, when she called up again to check before the start of school,
she was surprised to see that both her children’s names were removed
“and replaced by others”.
“I was told there were some misunderstanding and that it would be sorted
out before the start of the school year,” she said.
Staff from the division could not comment as they were away attending
the funeral of a senior education officer.
