Islanders attack administrator

MANAM Islanders at two care centres in the Bogia district of Madang province have reportedly attacked a senior public servant and stole a 40hp outboard motor and a banana boat belonging to the district administration last week.
Madang provincial police commander Chief Insp Anthony Wagambie Jr said the Bogia district administrator was assaulted by the Potsdam care centre settlers.
Mr Wagambie said in the same week a 21-foot banana boat powered by a 40hp motor belonging to the Bogia district administration was stolen by people from the Mangem care centre but was recovered later by Bogia police.
“We (police) are not aware of their reasons behind the assault and the stealing but I was asked to conduct peace negotiations with the parties involved in the incidents,” he said.
He said one person involved in the alleged assault was arrested last Tuesday while others were yet to be identified and arrested.
He also said police had received reports that Manam islanders care centres in Bogia were creating nuisance for the district authorities and the local land owners.
Meanwhile, the Manam Island leaders said they would bring those responsible to the police.
