Works ready to connect with upset win
in netball
By WENDY KATUSELE
WORKS have bitter memories of their last grand final appearance
with Telikom and want to settle that score tomorrow at the Rita
Flynn netball courts when the two teams meet again in the decider
in the Public servants netball premier division.
Telikom make their ninth premiership appearance, having won five
and are hoping for their six premiership title. But Works, who
lost to Telikom in 1996 by a mere point, are still being bugged by
memories of that season and have vowed to take sweet revenge.
After defeating Telikom twice this season, the Four-Mile women are
determined to repeat their major semi-final performance that saw
them book the grand final berth.
It had been a good season for Works who have also one of their
lower division team to fight it out with Ombudsman Commission in
the division five grand final.
Works have high flying wing attack Raka Nope who would be
utilising her international experience to come good under the post
with the much assistance to captain and goal shooter Kevau
Oaikaiva. Both were in devastating form last fortnight and should
continue that winning combination.
Telikomís defending pair of young Lorna Maso (GD) and Miriam Mega
(GK) have a daunting task but have been hard at training this week
despite rain marring several dayís of polishing up their
weaknesses.
Captain Ila Vala said that rain in the capital in the past few
days had not dampen their thirst to secure their sixth premiership
title.
She admitted though that her defenders would have to be on the
alert especially against Works and Pepes international Raka Nope.
Telikomís mid court will be led by centre Iavu Gedisa, wing attack
Wilma Gigimat and wing defend Kerry Tarua who should be able to
feed Vala and shooting partner Anne Dobbin (GA).
Both Vala and Dobbin will have to go pass Works goal keeper Kiri
Gamini (GK) and Walo Nope (GA) who have been working on containing
the Tellikomís duo.
Works have Miriam Numa (WA), Eileen Panap (C) and Ware Nope (WD)
to direct play in the mid court and senior player Kiri Gamini
knows what is expected off her chargers.
