PNG committed to Ramsi: Abal

PAPUA New Guinea has given its commitment and support to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (Ramsi).
Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration Minister Sam Abal gave this undertaking when he visited Solomon Islands last week.
Minister Abal and Solomon Islands foreign minister William Hamoi both arrived in Port Moresby last Saturday morning.
Mr Abal said the visit to Solomon Islands was a positive step in strengthening the relations between Solomon Islands and PNG and the Pacific Island Forum countries.
He said with the new Government in place in the Solomon Islands, a new partnership arrangement was needed to keep Ramsi on the ground.
Mr Abal said issues such as reporting, logistics and others needed to be worked out by the forum member countries.
Mr Hamoi thanked the Government and people of Papua New Guinea for their continued support and contribution to Ramsi.
The foreign minister is in PNG for the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Solomon Islands chancery to be erected in Port Moresby. The PNG Government had already allocated K5 million for the chancery.
Meanwhile, Minister Abal has raised concerns about illegal fishing in PNG and waters of the forum island nations after visiting and talking with the Forum Fishing Agency based in Honiara.
He said PNG would continue to support the Forum Fishing Agency and PIF countries to address the issue of illegal fishing.
