Navigational aid system rehabilitated

THE rehabilitation of the national maritime navigational aid system project was completed over the last two years at a cost of over K50.45 million.
This was disclosed in a brief from the Works and Transport Department forwarded to Minister Don Polye’s office.
Apart from that, purchasing and installation of equipment such as lights, power system, day marks, radar reflectors, marine towers and buoys cost over K2.2 million.
The community engagement component including land compensation payment cost another K3.2 million.
The ongoing training component for all National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) staff of 45 costs over K812,000.
From 2005 to the end of last year, a total of 174 lighthouses were constructed in the waters off Milne Bay, New Guinea Islands (NGI) region, Sandaun, Western provinces and Bougainville.
Milne Bay has the highest number of light houses with 38 and Bougainville 16. Provinces in NGI shared 55 while Sandaun and Western shared 16.
The report said the creation of the NMSA cost K3 million.
Water chart recompilation was completed early this year.
