Desperate grannie offers infant for sale
By GABRIEL FITO
A FOUR-day-old baby girl, whose mother died
shortly after giving birth last Sunday at Mui village, Maprik was offered
for sale for K150 outside the Maprik hospital last Thursday.
The baby’s grandmother, who took her to the hospital to seek medical
assistance, ended up marketing the baby, when the hospital decided not to
provide any relief as it lacked suitable facilities like incubators to cater
for infant.
According to the grandmother, the baby managed to survive without milk for
three days before she took her to the hospital.
The baby was crying and was in an agitated state when a woman offered to
breastfeed the baby after being paid K5.
Jimmy Wangi told The National that he was overwhelmed with sadness when he
sighted the baby so her offered money to a woman to breastfeed the infant.
Mr Wangi said it was very unfortunate that such major hospitals do not have
facilities like nurseries to cater for babies born with deformities or
needed special care and attention.
He could not say if the baby was sold as he left the hospital when the baby
was still feeding.
