Juni still a real champ

PNG lawn bowls champion Peter Juni maintained his title as the number one singles player when he won the 2008 Goroka men’s singles challenge at the weekend.
Juni outclassed rival Mano Kiale 21-16 while last year’s champion Robert Yeweh finished third spot after beating Solomon Siale 21-14.
The top three finishers led by Juni received prizes and awards sponsored by PNG Bowls vice-president Joe Drapok.
A total of 36 bowlers from the Goroka Bowling Club made up four team comprising nine players that competed in the challenge on Saturday and Sunday.
The winners in the four teams qualified for the finals play-off.
Club vice-president Tom Buckley said the weekend’s challenge was to prepare bowlers for the upcoming National Men’s Singles to be staged in Madang this weekend.
Buckley expressed confidence that Goroka will count on Juni to win the National Men’s Singles title.
Buckley said the winner of the national men’s singles would then qualify for any international men’s singles this year.
Juni said the singles event requires the bowler to implement his or her sole skills and knowledge on the green.
He said he would give it his best shots this weekend, and expects other members of his team to do the same.
