Nominations closing
soon for Port Moresby Snooker Open
PLAYERS intending to participate in the BSP-sponsored 2008
Port Moresby Snooker Open have until March 14 to clear all necessary entry
requirements which include K100 nomination fee.
POMBSA officials are anticipating an exciting field for the March 20-23
tournament following a good response from players participating in the SP
Inter Team competition, which cued off last week.
BSP, getting behind the challenge as major sponsors for the sixth
consecutive year, has some attractive prizes on offer for the top
performers.
The champion is expected to walk away with K1,500 and a trophy with the
runner-up getting K800 and a trophy.
Semi-finalists would receive K500 each, quarter-finalists K350 and the top
16 K200 each.
A player who scores the highest break of 50 points or more will get K500 and
a trophy while those who amass 32 to 49 points get K100 for each break.
Secretary Roger Wilson and publicity officer John Chan said yesterday they
were anticipating a minimum of 40 players.
The championship will cue off with an Opening Ceremony on Thursday, March 20
followed by the first round of matches on the same night.
The tournament will be conducted using a round robin format where
requirements for advancing would be best of three frames and the top two
will advance to the finals knockout stages (Top 16).
From the top 16 to the quarter finals matches will be played best of five
frames.
By semi-finals time on Sunday the result would be determined by a
best-of-seven challenge with the grand final match to be a best-of-nine
showdown followed by a barbecue and award presentation.
This is an open championship for men, women and even juniors and games will
be played at POM Country Club and Aviat Club.
Djorne Fong, based in Port Moresby, is the defending champion and other top
players like Gus Kraus, Ken Leo, Roger Ng, Howard Lahari, and vastly
improved Poliap Pokanau among others, will make strong bids too when they
decide to enter the competition.
Any enquiries or interested sponsors can contact Roger Wilson on 686 1212 or
