COLUMN I

IT just doesn’t look right, hiding shamefacedly in the bottom right hand corner of our computer screen: “Friday, February 29, 2008”.

GOOD morning. Well, once again it’s Leap Year and all those who were born on this day can at last celebrate their birthdays, something they can only do once in four years. We have a friend who begins her 80th calendar year today; don’t be upset dear, it’s not the end of the world, there are worse things than turning 80 – especially when your correct age is a flirtatious 20. Half your luck.

SO we wish all those for whom today is a long-awaited birthday all the best for a great day; live it up, given that you can only do so once every four years. But be careful now; no liquor until you turn 18, you know – and that means waiting until you’re 72. We’ll be watching.

WITH the weekend ahead, we thought it was time we remembered our movie fans. And we can offer something unforgetable tonight, when at 7.15 on the MGM channel you can catch that classic, Midnight Cowboy. Director John Schlesinger won an Oscar and the movie won another as best picture of the year in 1969.

NOBODY could forget Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman in the tale of a young Texan intent on becoming a New York stud, who ends up spending a cruel winter looking after his buddy, a conman dying of TB. Great acting, a great song and a brilliant piece of entertainment – it’s hard to believe the movie turns 40 years old next year.

ON Saturday afternoon you can sample There’s Something About Mary, one of the biggest box office hits of 1998 … it’s a broad comedy about a guy who decides to trace the girl he admired at high school – 13 years after they graduated. A cast of 90s stars – Cameron Diaz, Matt Dillon, Ben Stiller – set the pace. Just before 2 on Star Movies channel.

SEEN on the tombstone of Ezekial Aikle in East Dalhousie cemetery , Nova Scotia : “Here lies Ezekial Aikle, Aged 102. Only the Good Die Young.” Cheers!
