Beheaded in ambush

His immediate task is to hunt down the killers who attacked and killed three students on Monday. One was beheaded and died on the spot.
The three Maprik High School students were attacked by villagers who hid in the bushes with knives and sprang on them as they were walking home.
The students were returning to their Ibomunu and Yelihine villages in West Yangoru after classes at Maprik High School were temporarily suspended due to water problems.
Chief Supt Kabilo condemned the killing and urged leaders from Wingei and Buki villages to cooperate and bring those responsible to justice.
Grade 10 student Max Nawi died at the scene as his head was completely severed while Grade 9 student Junior Francis Haisi died near Passam National High School as he was being taken to the Wewak General Hospital for medical attention.
Nawi and Haisi were from Ibomunu village while the third Grade 9 student Junior Wolwol is from the neighboring Yelihine village.
Wolwol died on Wednesday at Maprik Hospital where he was nursing multiple wounds to parts of his body.
Police alleged that the killings at Wingei were to settle an earlier killing of a Wingei man last Sunday at Belegel village.
The students who were killed were not from that village.
Senior provincial education adviser Joseph Ouyoumb said the students were innocent and the manner in which they were killed was barbaric.
Mr Ouyoumb, also the chairman of the provincial education board has suspended classes at Wingei Primary and Elementary schools as from yesterday for an indefinite period until the safety of the students are guaranteed.
Tension between the Wingei and Buki villages is reportedly very high following the incident, with road blocks mounted along the Yangoru section of the Sepik Highway for reasons known only to themselves.
Mr Kabilo immediately dispatched three police units to the area to monitor the situation.
He went to the area yesterday to mediate with leaders and to bring those responsible to justice in an attempt to defuse the tension.
