It’s Gazelle and Bears in women’s

By EKONIA PENI
WILL it be another year of the Antelopes, or a year of revenge by the Grizzlies?
Grand finalists Bee Hive Gazelle and Airways Bears will answer the question in tomorrow’s finale of Port Moresby women’s softball to decide the 2007-08 season champions.
The Digicel-sponsored competition and final will be a replay of last season’s final which Gazelle won 7-5.
A capacity crowd is expected to pack the Bisini grandstand for the 2pm clash.
Bears will emerge as favourites given their depth in battng experience in Wendy Sogai, Wendy Katusele, Joyce Inguba, Tessie Komek, Helen Tata and Antonia Tatai.
Veteran Delin Bais if included as designated hitter will no doubt add more batting power for the Bears to win.
She batted well in the major semi final two weeks ago when Bears beat Stingerz.
“We have trained well this week and we are ready,” said Delin.
She said that if Bears can repeat the same form of two weeks ago against Stingerz then we should be able to beat Gazelle.
“Although the team which makes less errors will be the winner in the end,” she said.
PNG’s international pitcher Maggie Joseph’s fast deliveries should give Bears a head start as she will be the one to leading their assault.
But solid batting would be required to complement her efforts for a Bears victory.
Premiers Gazelle would have to start as underdogs despite their good wins in the semi final two weeks ago and the preliminary final last weekend.
Skipper and pitcher Grace Wanma said the team has also trained well this week and are ready to face Bears.
“It’s just another game and we will take it as it comes.
“We will not take them lightly as they (Bears) are a good team who will also be prepared for us.
“We will need to bat well though and make sure we maintain good fielding,” said Wanma as she prepares to feature as pitcher, a position she handled well when Gazelle beat Bears last season.
In the B grade final the Andrew Moe coached Tikina will start as favourites over Budget Real Estate Wantoks at 11am.While Dolphins are favoured over Tikina in the Under 16 final at 9am.
