Islanders on health centre drive

THE people of Petats Island in Bougainville are on a self-help drive to build a health centre.
People on the island, which is situated off the eastern coast of Buka Island, sometimes find difficulties in accessing medical services and transporting emergency cases by boat to the main hospital in Buka.
Spokesman for the Petats health centre committee Francis Sihon said the aim was to bring services to the people.
He said the health centre would cater for about 3,000 people on the island and reduce the number of people travelling to Buka to seek medical attention for minor complaints.
Mr Sihon said in the past few weeks, the committee had raised K7, 131.61 through a wheelbarrow push, coffee nights, sale of fresh fish and other activities.
He said they planned to raise K50,000.
Mr Sihon said they had already received quotations for materials and had submitted a copy to the United church health office in Hutjena for funding.
He appealed to Petats islanders, North Bougainville MP James Togel and NGOs for support.
