Webster: Graft hinders progress

CORRUPTION at all levels diverts resources away from development and growth, and its impact is evident in Papua New Guinea.
National Research Institute director and Corruption Research Committee chairman Dr Thomas Webster said during the one-day anti-corruption workshop held on Wednesday that corruption was another social issue just like HIV/AIDS that needed attention from everyone – the Government, lawmakers and the civil society – in order for development to take place.
Dr Webster said NRI’s research focus was on criminal and legal frameworks, social, political, and investigations into internet, white-collar and rural crimes and piracy, human smuggling, child abuse, drug trafficking, arms dealing and terrorism encompassing corruption a wider spectrum.
“We are not saying that we will do away with corruption but provide needed information to formulate and implement policies to fight corruption so as to minimise and reduce widespread corruption by any means,” he said.
