Willie: I didn’t attempt
to burn house
By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
KEROWAGi MP Alphonse Willie yesterday denied mobilising a mob and
attempting to burn a house in Port Moresby.
“That allegation is baseless and was created by an intending candidate
to sway my voters in the forthcoming national elections.”
Mr Willie, however, admitted that he was the unnamed MP in a police
report on Wednesday.
He denied involvement in attempts to burn down a house at Morata at
about 1.30am last Thursday.
“Yes … I was drunk when I went to that house. But I just went there to
check on it. While there, I was advising the security guards about my
presence there.
“But the neighbours misinterpreted our conversation and attempted to
damage the house.
“You see … I have been in that community that long and they are familiar
with me. I did not mobilise any one to damage the house as reported.”
Mr Willie said that he has been living in that two storey house that has
nine bedrooms and three toilets/shower rooms since June 2004 and not
2002 as reported.
“And I had spent over K200,000 to renovate that house and not me owing
the tenant that amount of money as reported.”
Mr Willie said that there was no written agreement with Sir Mathias
Merimba – the owner of that house to rent that house.
“It was just a gentlemen’s agreement that I live in that house and do
maintenance on it.
“We came up with that agreement in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province
straight after the burial of the late Simbu Governor Fr Louis Ambane.”
Mr Willie said the K100,000 cheque of which a copy was faxed to Mr
Merimba and his lawyer was from his housing loan obtained from the
National Parliamentary Services and not from his National Alliance Party
as reported.
“I faxed them a copy after they issued a summons to me over the
ownership of that house. I told them that I have taken this money to
build my house at the Nine-Mile settlement. I’m still paying off that
loan.”
