Kavieng inmates undergo rehab exercise

By VERONICA MANUK
FIFTEEN inmates from Kavieng Jail are on a week-long fishing trip with Correction Services officers in the waters off New Ireland as part of their rehabilitation exercise.
Twenty-one others are currently employed by several companies in the province.
Kavieng jail is one of the few in the province that has put emphasis on prisoners’ rehabilitation.
Kavieng jail commander Francis Gahuye said the 15 prisoners with five CS officers are doing their practical jobs after taking a week-long theory workshop on modern fishing techniques.
The two-week course is being conducted by the National Fisheries College in Kavieng.
Mr Gahuye received the big catch from the inmates yesterday which weighed 47kg.
He said the inmates would return tomorrow from their fishing trip.
Currently, they were spending nights on an island.
He said 21 prisoners were also employed by private companies.
