Man in court for allegedly making false entry
By SHEILA LASIBORI
A CUSTOMS officer appeared in court for allegedly making a false entry
involving K5,000 that was paid as customs duty fee for an imported
vehicle, between Jan 17 and Jan 22.
Samson Sala, 29, of Kagua in Southern Highlands province appeared before
the Boroko District Court on Wednesday after being charged by police on
Tuesday under Section 153 (e) of the Customs Act, Chapter 101.
According to police, Sala allegedly did make a false entry in removing a
used Mitsubishi Carisma, imported from Japan, from PNG Customs.
The court proceeding against Sala stems from allegations that on Jan 17,
he approached Moses Haro, a customs agent with DHL Global, at Six-Mile
and requested the officer to engage him (Sala) in any clearance work if
he (officer) had any outstanding.
Police alleged that Sala further advised the officer that he had a
customs clearance agent business doing clearance work.
At the time Mr Haro had an outstanding task to do, which was to clear an
imported used car belonging to Michael Avai.
On Jan 22, Sala informed Mr Haro via telephone and said the vehicle was
cleared and he wanted the money for the payment of customs duty.
On Jan 25, Mr Mose and Mr Haro, after confirming that the money was
ready for pickup, went to Downtown Port Moresby where they got the money
from Mr Avai and passed it onto the defendant.
Police alleged that Sala put to his own use the money obtained for duty
fee and forwarded documents of false entry he made to the importee for
the release of the vehicle.
Sala is out on K500 bail, and the court has ordered him to report to the
prosecutions office at Boroko every Monday and Thursday between 8am and
4pm, awaiting his court proceeding.
