Law on foreign workers before Parlt

LABOUR Minister Matthew Siune said he was encouraged by recent reports that ENFI PNG, contractors of the Ramu nickel project in Madang, had taken steps to rectify working conditions at its Basamuk site.
Mr Siune said he had asked the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations to monitor the developments and to ensure that the company carried on with its undertakings.
He has instructed the department to step up a rigourous inspection campaign across the country to ensure those that contravened PNG rules were held accountable.
He added that under the direction of Secretary David Tibu, inspectors would continue to visit all workplaces throughout the country in the coming months.
Mr Siune further announced that the National Executive Council had approved, for introduction into Parliament, a new law on foreign employment which would ensure a balance between the needs of the business community and legal expectations of people for decent work and opportunity.
He said the draft legislation would promote training and empowerment opportunities and remove unnecessary red tape and impediments to investment and growth.
Mr Siune said the new law would further strengthen the capacity of the department to monitor and enforce compliance with the rules regarding employment of non-citizens.
“Indeed, our new legislation will provide a clear way forward for all parties, and I am hopeful that this new law will be considered in the current session of Parliament,” Mr Siune said yesterday.
He further called for cooperation from all stakeholders involved in the employment of foreign workers.
“I wish to make it clear that I expect all parties, in particular, businesses which engage in the services of non-citizens, to work with the department to ensure our legal system is upheld and respected,” he said.
