Tari to launch electrification project

TARI in the Southern Highlands will come alive tomorrow for the launching of the multi-million kina SHP rural electrification programme.
Organising committee spokesman Joseph Warai told The National from Tari yesterday that the Hela people are excited that after nearly 19 years, their gas at Hides would give them power.
“They are thankful to the Government, PNG Power Ltd and Hides Joint Venture Company for facilitating the project.”
Earlier, it was planned that Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare will attend the launching.
However, PM’s media adviser Betha Somare yesterday said Sir Michael would travel to Kundiawa for the launching of a road project there.
Ms Somare said State Enterprises Minister Arthur Somare would attend the launching instead.
The project, to cost about K80 million, would see PNG Power and HJV supply electricity to all the districts in the Southern Highlands and Kandep in Enga provinces.
Chairman of HJV Philip Undialu said for 17 years since Hides was in operation, Hela and SHP had been in the dark, and the project was a milestone.
