Local leader to contest COUNCIL president of Kote Local Level Govern-ment in the Finschhafen district of Morobe province will be contesting the Finschhafen open seat. Mictine Kemung raised his hands saying his people had suffered long without roads, health and education services deteriorating. The two-term LLG president told supporters at a Tru Morobe Grup (TMG) rally hosted at the Sattelberg station. Mr Kemung will run under the TMG banner, a political group branching from the Morobe Community Welfare and Justice (MCWJ) that have been vocal on political and social issues in the province. Laws for funds need changes LAWS guiding provincial funds for districts and local level governments (LLG) should be changed when forming the new governments after the general election this year. This is because funds allotted for projects were not received by the districts and LLGs levels within the province. The call came from the Tru Morobe Group (TMG) which had been spearheading political awareness campaign to change provincial government laws on distribution of district and LLG funds because of alleged misappropriation and corrupt practices at the provincial level by bureaucrats and contractors. Students start classes STUDENTS attending Utmei Secondary School in East New Britain province started classes yesterday. The students have been out of classes for five weeks due to a faulty electrical generator. Acting education adviser Pius Gawi confirmed classes had begun and the usual eight-lesson periods would be extended to 10 to cover lost time. He was happy students would be returning to school and the school’s administration must be strict with operations of the generator. Teams search for war heroes THREE search teams from the US Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) are in the country to recover unaccounted Americans who lost their lives during World War Two (WWII). Thirty-four JPAC personnel were deployed to PNG on Jan 18 to exca-vate three separate aircraft crash sites in Morobe province, where teams previously searched for and recovered remains of American aircrews that died in the 1940s. Once the mission is completed, remains and material evidence found at the site will be return-ed to JPAC headquarters in Hawaii where forensic scientist will try to identity the remains so that they may be returned to their families and buried with full military honours. The US government has conducted recovery missions in PNG since 1979 and to date JPAC has recovered and identified over 1,300 unaccounted for Americans. Eviction attempt halted AN attempt by the BUP Landowners Association to evict families and block holders at portion 351 Malahang in Lae has been halted by the Land Court in Lae. Senior provincial Land Court Magistrate Cosmos Inkisopo was satisfied that the BUP Association’s title over portion 351 is subject to dispute and told the disputing parties that whenever land is bona fide in dispute, it becomes a National Court interest under the District Court Act, Section 21 (4) (f) and disqualified himself from further hearing the case. Mr Inkisopo told the parties last Thursday that the onus was now up to them in seeking redress in a competent court of law.
