Unitech students still without rooms

By JASON SOM KAUT
MORE than 100 students at the University of Technology still do not have rooms although some were pre-allocated rooms late last year.
This was revealed to The National yesterday afternoon by some of the affected students, who did not want to be named in fear of the school taking disciplinary measures against them.
They said more than 50% of those affected were third and fourth year students.
Some of these students are on national scholarship programmes but still are without rooms.
They said the student services had assured them that they would be allocated rooms soon.
A third-year architecture and building student said “it has been over a week now and we still don’t have rooms”.
“The last we were told was that we will be allocated rooms outside campus,” the student said.
Apparently the campus at Telikom Training College, where some students reside, is also filled to capacity and cannot take anymore residents.
It is understood that the university administration is looking at other accommodation alternative to house the students off campus.
One alternative might be the IEA Okari Campus.
Attempts by The National to contact the Vice-Chancellor Misty Baloiloi for comments yesterday were unsuccessful.
The pro Vice-Chancellor, who also handles student issues, said “I cannot respond to that issue”.
The director of student services when contacted yesterday demanded the names of the concerned students.
When his request was declined, he too said he had “no comments to make”.
“These students should come out and give their names so we can justify and address their concerns,” he said.
