Kigasung, Meier given chief titles

REVEREND Dr Wesley Kigasung, head of the
Evangelical Lutheran church in PNG, and Michael Meier, archbishop of
Western Highlands, have been bestowed title of chief by Governor-General
Sir Paulias Matane during an investiture ceremony that transpired at the
Government House at Konedobu yesterday.
Dr Kigasung and bishop Meier were invested with the insignia of the
Grand Companions of the Order of Logohu (GCL) by Sir Paulias for their
untiring services to the church and communities in PNG.
The title of GCL is the second highest honour in the Order of PNG to
grand chief which is shared by the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and
Sir Paulias.
Both men were the only recipients of the title apart from former US
president Bill Clinton, who visited PNG late last year.
Dr Kigasung was recognised for his services to the Evangelical Lutheran
church and as head bishop and the community through his dedicated
services as a pastor and spiritual leader of the people of the Lutheran
faith.
Bishop Meier, on the other hand, was named chief for service to the
Catholic church and the community, particularly the people of Western
Highlands, where he served as a missionary priest, teacher and
archbishop for 44 years.
Mr Clinton was conferred the title of chief of for his service to the
world community and for his outstanding leadership for the good of
mankind during his two terms as president of US (1993-2001) and his
commitment to the global fight against HIV/AIDS and other health and
community challenges in developing countries.
Hundred others were also recognised for their services and contributions
to PNG in areas of sports, medicine, public service, law, education,
health and social and economic development.
