PM seeks EC brief

By HARLYNE JOKU
PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare assured Members of Parliament yesterday that he would be asking the electoral commissioner to brief him on election preparations following concerns raised in relation to the update of electoral rolls.
Sir Michael confirmed that his own electorate was sent only 60,000 ballot papers, which was less than the amount of eligible voters in East Sepik.
Sir Michael said there was nothing much that could be done to change the election laws with just one Parliament session to go.
“There is nothing much we can do now to amend the law. It is a constitutional amendment. We have only one more Parliament session before the elections. I’m sure the electoral commissioner and his officers know what to do and we should work together and support the new concept of LPV,” Sir Michael said.
He was responding to questions raised by the Member for Kiriwina-Goodenough Brian Pulayasi and Yangoru-Saussia’s Peter Waranaka that many voters in their electorates had not enrolled.
