Soccer dates fixed

By HENRY MORABANG
PAPUA New Guinea will host two regional soccer competitions in Lae and Port Moresby in April this year.
According to the calendar released by PNGFA chief executive officer Dimirit Mileng this week, the two international events are the Oceania Football Confederation women’s World Cup qualifier in Lae and the Oceania Football Confederation Under 12 Football Festival in Port Moresby.
The tournament in Lae will be held at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium while the Under 12 Festival will be held at the Sir John Guise Stadium at Waigani.
The 2007 Calendar of Event was release this week after the PNGFA technical committee approved it at its meeting last month. Mileng said the local tournaments and competitions will take place as usual.
The 2007 national men’s and women’s club championship tournament is scheduled to be held in Port Moresby being hosted by either Port Moresby Soccer Association (PMSA) or by the National Capital District Public Servants Soccer Association (NCDPSSA).
He said the technical committee has also proposed a senior men’s and women’s (junior) National Futsal tournament this year (2007) but the date and the venue will be announced later if the proposal works out well.
Mileng also confirmed that regional club championships will be held within the months of May and June. “Four centres Alotau, Madang, Wabag and New Britain Palm Oil Soccer Associations (NBPOL) will host the regional club championship tournaments for their respective regions”, he said.
Also included on the calendar is the men’s and women’s regional association championship, which are qualifiers for the bi-annual PNGFA National Cup championship to be held in 2008.
The Regional Association Championships are scheduled to be hosted by Mount Hagen, Wau, Bougainville and Amona Koupa Soccer Associations in their respective regions.
Mileng called on the association presidents in each region to meet together and set the dates of the PNGFA Cup Qualifiers, and inform the PNGFA secretariat.
However, he said the venues of the local events are likely to be changed depending on host associations not being able to meet certain requirements.
“The dates and the venues of the Junior Besta Tournaments will be determined by the PNGFA executive committee in consultation with the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation (PNGSF)”, Mileng said.
