Women rugby now part of Moresby competition

By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
The Port Moresby rugby football union will host the first ever inclusion of a women’s rugby union competition in PNG that will run as part of its club competition this year.
This was one of several initiatives announced during POMRFU’s season launch on Tuesday.
WRU vice-president Sarah Tsiamalili said so far four teams have been confirmed out of the proposed eight team competition, therefore the teams have not been named yet.
“The women’s rugby union is currently in the infant stages of its inception and so have only recently made steps to begin coordinating with our three other pilot provinces for our development over the next two to three years,” she said.
“We are also presently in the process of finalising our corporate plan which we aim to launch next month”.
POMRFU president Emmanuel Narokobi said POMRFU is taking a more professional approach in the running of the competition this year with Hebou Construction, Credit Corporation and Pacific Foam joining its list of corporate backers.
Hebou Construction will assist with fencing, car park and the improvement and maintenance of the playing field.
Hebou operations manager Nick Constantinou said no figures have been committed for these projects yet as discussions on the actual work have not been finalised.
Pacific Foam will assist with putting up a scoreboard while Credit Corporation will make an announcement soon.
Narokobi said that more funding and emphasis will be given to the under 19s because they are looking at scheduling matches during some of the representative tournaments.
He said with the end of year international fixture now becoming permanent, under 19 players will have an incentive to play well.
The president also appealed to both male and female members of the public who are interested in refereeing to contact POMRFU.
POMRFU secretary Lincoln Hanson said a three-week pre-season begins this weekend with the 26-week competition starting on March 24.
Medics have been relegated from the premier division to A grade after finishing last in 2006.
Their spot has been taken by the Southern Chiefs who won the A grade division.
Premier division: University, Harlequins, Defence, Wanderers, Brothers, Kone Sharks and Southern Chiefs.
A/B/U19 divisions: Chiefs, Harlequins, Taurama Diggers, University, Wanderers, Kone, Crusaders, Defence, LaSallians, Brothers (u19 POMIS) and Medics.
Other important dates on the calendar include the super 4s (June 23-30), Port Moresby 7s (October), Wanderer’s 7s (early November) followed by the MRDC 7s.
