What happened to police?
The recent conflict between Western Highlanders and people from Enga who live in and around the Tea School area has caused a lot of inconvenience and some people have lost their lives. When I read in the media I could hardly believe the lack of involvement by the police. Where are the Hagen police? It is the role of the police to stop fights and bring peace into the community. It seems you guys are not doing your jobs well. Why do the policemen let Western Highlanders burn down houses and destroy property right in the heart of Mt Hagen city. It is about time the Police Department should do something about the work of the police. If police were in place quickly, I know that all the houses and property would not have been destroyed. Mt Hagen police should wake up and look after all the people who are living right under their nose. – Peter Kini, HLIS -Amapyaka, Enga province

Balop queried

I refer to the report “Claims of fraud at College’’ (The National, Feb 5). It is very disappointing to read frequent reports of Balop Teachers College enrolling students with fake certificates. I have myself witnessed Grade 9 students using other students’ certificate to get enrolled. Many of them are not even able to solve simple algebraic problem or write simple English. How they are able to teach in primary schools is a great concern. If teacher’s colleges are producing unqualified teachers then I’m afraid our nation is in great danger. If this is happening I will hesitate to enrol my children in Government schools. This must become an important issue for the Education Department. – Drex Gene, China

Stop graffiti in NCD

The effort by our Governer Powes Parkop to clean up NCD is gaining momentum and heading in the right direction. The onus is now on the city residents to take ownership and to ensure the cleanliness of this city. One thing that is become an eyesore is the amount of graffiti on the fences and wall of buildings in the city. Every time a new fence or building is erected, you have graffiti sprawlled all over it in no time. Can the city authorities do something about this and enforce tougher penalties on those caught with spray cans in their hands? – No to graffiti, NCD
