Five suspects turned over in students’ killing

By GABRIEL FITO
FIVE people have been handed over to police in connection with the attack on three Maprik High School students in East Sepik province last week.

The two students who were killed in the attack were cousins.
A third, who was reported to have died later in hospital, is in fact still alive. His condition is critical but stable.
The five are now in police custody in Maprik.
The relatives of the two students who died are seeking K2 million in compensation from the Wingei villagers.
They have warned that if the compensation is not paid within two weeks, they would take the law into their own hands through revenge.
The compensation demand was made known to East Sepik provincial police commander Chief Supt Leo Kablio and Deputy provincial administrator Otto Ganai at Ibomunu village last Saturday.
Wingei villagers were also urged to hand over 11 suspects who are still at large.
Kabilo and Yangoru police station commander James Baugen relayed the demands to Wingei villagers last Saturday evening.
Wingei community leaders say they would co-operate with police and hand in all suspects so that justice can take its course.
The leaders have identified 11 people who would be handed over to police.
