Government attention needed
On behalf of my family and friends in Lae, we want to send
our sincere condolences to the family of the late students who suffered in a
barbaric act that we wish to condemn.
This is a new kind of conflict resolution for this area and I think the
government of the day needs to pay attention to this problem.
1. The Government has delayed village council elections in all districts
leaving no Government leadership at the village level. Youths now take
advantage because there is no Government representative in the community.
When the new council is elected, these councillors will become brief case
carriers for Members of Parliament. This will further compound problems in
the villages.
2. The community policing concept worked well under the leadership of the
provincial police chief Leo Kabilo, in East Sepik province, especially in
the area where this barbaric crime was committed. People became respectful
of the law and auxiliary police, who worked hard to reduce drug and alcohol
problems in the villages. In many cases they have attended to the roles of
police officers in dealing with serious crimes, and in making arrests.
However, the Government failed these hard working men who have never been
given any recognition or paid any allowances.
3. Maprik High School has been facing problems every year. In 1977 whilst a
student at this school, I spent plenty of time guarding the water pipe line
into the school instead of attending classes.
This problem is still being faced today. When can the Government properly
look into financing institutions of learning for the future generation? Why
are taxes being paid to the Government? Is it to fill up the pockets of MPs
and their cronies or for service delivery to ordinary Papua New Guineans?
I believe community leaders alone can resolve this tense situation. But the
Government needs to do more for the people of Papua New Guinea.
