Choose leaders who have visions
THE people must this year sit back
and analyse what went wrong with the many leaders they elected.
For years, there have been many negative news about our leaders
but who are we to really blame for the lack of development in our
areas – no one but ourselves.
Not all the elected leaders are bad.
There are some who have done exceptionally well for their
electorates.
One such person is Gabriel Kapris. His efforts are clear for all
to see in Maprik.
Another fine leader is Dame Carol Kidu whose passion is derived
around the basic human rights of every Papua New Guinean.
She feels the needs of the people.
We need more such leaders in Parliament so that the interests of
the women are looked after.
We are all responsible for the choices we make in life.
When they turn out negatively, we have to take responsibility and
learn from them to make better decisions in the future.
We must now reflect on the past five years and analyse the
performance of our elected members.
Those who have done nothing and are doing last-minute work during
the months leading up to the elections have lived a life of luxury
at the expense of the people.
For 2007, the challenge is for everyone to make the right choice
to lead this wonderful nation to greater heights.
When these leaders go astray, they must be held accountable.
The population of PNG is about six million and our vast resources
can cater for everyone so why is this not happening?
Why are we not able to enjoy a good standard of living?
Why are people still living in poverty and relying on the
Government for basic services?
The answer is very simple: it is the people we have elected to
lead us.
We must have the right leaders, people who are visionary and who
carry this nation in their heart and not their head.
We must have leaders who see PNG as a whole and not regionalise.
We can learn from the life of our founding father, Sir Michael
Somare, who never at any time regionalised this nation.
We now have prominent Papua New Guineans with great leadership and
management skills to manage the nation and at the same time, still
welcome foreigners to contribute to our nation-building.
I love PNG very much and believe that we have a huge potential as
a nation if only the right people are in government.
