Volcano eruption rumours in Manus not true

THE possibility of a volcano erupting on Baluwan Island in Manus is unlikely and people have been urged not to come up with unrealistic and threatening rumours, provincial administrator Wep Kanawi said.
He was speaking in relation to rumours that an extinct volcano on Baluwan erupted last Saturday.
Mr Kanawi said some people had approached him last weekend, since he was the chairman of provincial disaster, and reported that they had seen heavy dark clouds on top of Baluwan.
He then alerted the Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO) last weekend and at the same time sent officers to the island to confirm the reports.
The officers, reportedly returned saying there was no such eruption taking place and the message was then relayed by Mr Kanawi to RVO.
He said the rumour had created anxiety and panic amongst people in Manus and on the island itself.
Mr Kanawi urged people to be careful when fabricating such stories as it was a sensitive issue concerning people’s lives.
