Review NCD road contract: Polye

DEPUTY Prime Minister Don Polye said yesterday it was not justifiable to spend K36 million to upgrade 1.8km of road in the capital city, and called on the National Capital District Commission to review the contract.
The call by Mr Polye, an engineer by profession, adds weight to concerns about the cost involved raised by the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce this week. The Chamber had made inquiries and concluded that the contract was excessive.
In a statement yesterday, Mr Polye said he was concerned as to how it would be justifiable to spend K36 million to do just 1.7 to 1.8km of roadwork.
He urged the NCDC board of Governor Wari Vele to revise the contract, which was awarded to Global Construction.
Work has already begun despite growing opposition and questions about the costs.
