Opp wants K700mil used for development projects

THE National Government has been called on to re-invest K700 million of the surplus in the budget into agriculture, law and order and the community.
Deputy Opposition leader and Namatanai MP Byron Chan made the call yesterday and also tasked the Government to address the housing problem for public servants throughout the country.
Mr Chan said apart from the extra gains from high commodity prices, especially from gold and oil exports, the Government must seriously tackle the unemployment rate and the law and order problems that are crippling development in the country.
“If the Government was serious enough about its green revolution policy, it should put the money to revitalise the agriculture sector by re-establishing or introducing agriculture freight subsidies and reinvesting in reviving co-operative societies and funding for rural bank, cocoa and coffee savings and loans and micro-finance banks,” Mr Chan said.
“The law and order problem needs to be addressed sincerely,” he said, adding that PNG needed another 1,000 police personnel or half of them to be reserve officers.
Mr Chan also called for the Government to spend K100 million annually for the next five years to resolve the accommodation problem being experienced by public servants in the country.
