PNGDF officers involved in riot

By SHEILA LASIBORI
A DEFENCE Force investigation into the rampage of a Central province community has revealed that three of its members – two of them currently on active duties – were involved.
The two privates and a corporal, all of them members of the Support Company at the Taurama Barracks in Port Moresby, were in the company of staff from a security company (named) owned and operated by a former Defence commander, when they attacked the community on the afternoon of Feb 1.
The attack resulted in several houses being destroyed, windscreen of vehicles damaged, among other things, including threats to rape females and kill the residents.
The group numbering about 20 men posing as members of the PNGDF Delta Company allegedly said to return to the area accompanied by the Taurama-based Bravo and Charlie Company.
They had also told the settlers that the former commander (named) was their boss.
The National understands the corporal is currently on a six-month leave and the PNGDF is aware that the officer is working with the company while on leave.
The report of the investigation by the Taurama-based support company, reportedly “yet to reach” Murray Barracks, has recommended that the officers be dealt with by being charged.
According to PNGDF authorities, since the officers are non-commissioned officers, they may have to perform extra duties within seven to 14 days or be demoted in their ranks.
The investigation team was told that the corporal was very influential on the two privates, leading them together with staff at the company he was working.
