Assistance for affiliates

THE Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union has donated K50,000 worth of equipment to assist two of its affiliates signifying its support for the development of the code in the country.
PNGRFU's initiative under the International Rugby Board's funding is set to spread its wing to rugby playing centres spread in terms of better and quality equipment to enhance its players.
The two recipients yesterday were womens rugby and the Port Moresby rugby union.
President of PNGRFU Graeme Osborne said with IRB's assistance, PNG is able to support its affiliates it was up to PNGRFU to ask for more allocation to continue the initiative.
"With rugby a go ahead sport played now in most centres in the country, the equipment should assist our players with conducive training," Osborne said.
Chief Executive officer Peter Tsiamalili Jr added that the initiative would also ensure its affiliates to have access to basic training especially with the new equipment which is very expensive to purchase.
He said affiliates have until the end of next month to register in order to acquire the assistance.
The equipment includes balls, kicking tees, body pads, tackling bags, hit shields, body armour and cones.
Womens rugby president, Cybelle Druma said with the unlimited resource faced by clubs in obtaining such equipment, the gesture is definitely going to be a relief.
"With the challenges faced by clubs the incentive should be a boost to training programs especially with clubs not able to have such equipment," Druma said.
Druma said with three centres under the pilot project, the trial endeavour should be a boost to Port Moresby, Goroka and Alotau.
Already six clubs have signed up with the Port Moresby competition.
They include University, Southern Chief, Lasalians, Crusaders, Wanderers and Defence.
The competition is set to kick off next month.
POMRFU president Emmanuel Narokobi also applaunded IRB's funding adding it would be a boost to preparations of its representative sides.
Meanwhile Narokobi is calling on people to come forward and assist in refereeing as there are courses in place to enhance whistle blowers.
He also challenged women to take up refereeing.
