Working out details of PNG Games
A total of 63 participants from 16 provinces have attended the inaugural PNG Games workshop staged in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province, recently. The workshop was conducted to disseminate information about the third PNG Games which will be hosted in Lae in November this year. The provinces which attended the workshop were Bougainville, Central, East New Britain, Eastern Highlands, East Sepik, Enga, Madang, Manus, Morobe, National Capital District, Oro, Chimbu, Southern Highlands, West New Britain, Western and Western Highlands. Ok Tedi Mining Limited Sports Officers attended as observers. Four provinces which did not attend were Gulf, Milne Bay, New Ireland and West Sepik (Sandaun). The facilitators were John Kambuou, Executive Director of PNG Sports Foundation; Edris Kumbruwah, the chairman of the PNG Games Council; Brian Minikin, Regional Sports Development Officer (Oceania National Olympic Committee - ONOC); and Joseph Bau Maras, Chairman of the Host Games Organising Committee (HOC) in Lae. Minikin supported the concept of the PNG Games and stressed that sports could only develop through structured competitions at different levels. He pointed out that currently the Olympic Movement was supporting 11 countries in the Pacific region to stage their National Games. Joseph Bau Maras and his committee reported on the preparations in Lae and assured everyone that the Games would be bigger and better. Fifteen different sports including two events for people with disability will be contested at the Games. PNG Games Council chairman Edris Kumbruwah acknowledged the partnership with the provincial governments. He made a commitment for the council to assist with the facilitation of regional event mnagement curses to assist provinces to conduct inter-district games. The three-day workshop was a success. Meanwhile, delegates from the highlands provinces are calling for support from their provincial governments to send teams to Lae.
