Doctor assists Madang youths in soccer

By JEFFREY ELAPA
A senior medical doctor in Madang has become the first person to assist youths from one of the most feared settlements in Madang.
Dr Cecelia Kange, a specialist pediatrician, has donated two sets of soccer uniforms to the Bilau Maus Rot Settlement male and female soccer clubs outside Madang town during the weekend.
Dr Kange, when presenting the uniforms, said that most people used to be afraid to come to the settlement because of the frequent criminal activities.
She said that the travelling public alone the North Coast road are always at fear of being harassed, intimidated or held up when approaching the settlement but she decided to assist them to turn in to sporting activities.
She said people at the settlement are good but it was just the general perception people had as one of the notorious criminal breeding places in the province.
"I see that there are many good peace loving people here. The Biliau Maus Rot settlement has been tarnished as a criminal breeding ground but I see that the youths need some kind of active engagements to keep them busy like in sports.
I have the heart for you as a mother and I want you to change from your bad habits and make a change in your lives," she said.
Dr Kange said that youths are the future leaders of tomorrow but need some kind of policies to create avenues to actively engage the youths.
She said that once they are actively involved in some kind of activities then they would give up from their bad habits.
She said that youths only turn into criminal activities and other illegal activities like using drugs as a way to past their time and look for opportunities to made life interesting.
Meanwhile, she urged the youths to use the opportunity to take part in the Madang Soccer Association and change the bad name of the settlement.
"Show everyone that you are changed lot of people and not the old Biliau Maus Rot settlers. Play a fair and just game when you are out on the field. Accept lose if you are defeated. You don't expect to win all the time. When you play good sportsmen you then promote your settlement through the sport," she said.
She said decided to help the youths as a mother with heart for the youths by providing them the opportunity to change their bad habits.
The settlers thanked Dr Kange for her generous assistance.
